Dinner and Dance - Club Trophy Winners

Jimmy Love congratulates Brian Wright on receiving the National Coach of the Year award for 2010. Jimmy explained that this was a real accolade as it was awarded to the person judged to be the best UK coach across all sports in 2010. Well done Brian.

Harmeet Dhiraj wins the Jackson Cup for novice 25 miles Time Trial riders

Jim's run of success at the Trophy presentations just goes on and on. Following his prestigious 2010 Mug of the Year award (for services to architecture using a Luton Van), this year he effortlessly scooped the Gurgle Fish award - the ultimate (as in last!) prize in the raffle. A clearly ecstatic Jim accepts the award while rest of us breathed a sigh of relief!

After a very full day of training at the Newport velodrome, Kirsten arrives in a nick of time to collect her Schoolgirls Track Champion trophy and Schoolgirls Road Race Championship.

It's business as normal for National Masters Champion, European Masters Champion and World Masters finalist, Jayne Paine. She retrieves her Ladies Track and Ladies Road Race trophies for yet another year's storage on her mantelpiece.

Nick "Ton-up" Tidmarsh is recognised for his achievement with a trophy that is named after him. The "Nick Tidmarsh" Trophy will in future be awarded to the 10 mile Time Trail champion.

Peter Dixon scooped a hat full of trophies at the awards. His achievements for 2010 are -

Peter Turnbull is the Club Mens Audax Champion.

Martin Lucas won the President's Trophy for the longest ride in Italy. He was the first UK rider to finish the grueling Mille Miglia 1,000 mile Audax ride in Italy the summer.

The Willesden CC also scooped the Audax UK championship - a mighty achievement.

Stuart Birnie, sporting one of the dozens of hand knitted hats made by Gladys Joy Purdy and Wendy Mears cuts a dashing figure as he pick ups the Sportive Award and Hill Climb Championship.

Wendy Mears did some gnarly rides to complete the Audax UK Randonneur Round the Year Award (a 200km ride in every month of the year). Here Wendy receives the Audax Merit Award and the Ladies Audax Championship. A very popular win judging by the cheer that went up.

Tom London wins the the Club Road Road Championship and the Club Track Championship.

Connor Woodford is the Willesden CC's Schoolboys Track Champion.
If you think Connor looks a little mature to be a schoolboy - the trophy was received on behalf of Connor by his rightly proud Granddad, Tony Woodford.

Gladys Joy and Ron Purdy collect the Marshalling trophy for a lot of very early alarm calls in 2010.

Yet Another Chance To Warm Your Willy

Last weekend's Limited Edition Willie did not work as intended - see Paul's ride report, so another chance on the 29th for anyone wanting a 200k PBP qualifier.

The plan was for Ray Kelly and Scott Williams of YACF to route check the Willy Warmer on Saturday as they couldn’t make the scheduled date for various reasons. That suited me fine as it meant I could cut away to ride the linking part of the Little Willy between Sulhampstead and Beechill. So far so good. What I had not planned on was that they would ruthlessly drop me on the road to Henley where there is an info control and then hide behind some bushes whilst I rode by. Anyway, not finding them in Henley and discovering that I had no phone signal on O2, I had no option but to push on to Pangbourne whereon I received a text saying they'd back tracked to Chalfont looking for me. Some story. So there you have it. First they dropped me and then they packed. I reckon they just didn’t fancy another 70km into a howling headwind. You just cannot get good staff nowadays.

Anyways, such is my generous and forgiving nature I have allowed them to make another attempt on Sat 29th January and cordially extend the invitation to all those Willesden Riders who have opted to attend the Willesden Dinner instead of soaking up ten hours of January sunshine, but would still if pressed like to log qualifying rides for PBP and the Willesden 2011 Super Randonneur award.

You have a choice of dates for the Willie Warmer, the first of our Paris-Brest-Paris qualifiers. With impeccable timing the official ride is on Saturday, 22nd January , giving you barely time to cycle from the end of the ride to the annual dinner, but any Willesdenite can join Paul Stewart and others on a special Limited Edition Willie on the 15th, riding the same route and getting in that early PBP qualifier.

Cycling Film Show 30 Jan 2011

The annual Hammersmith Cyclists Film Show is at the Riverside Studios in West London on Sunday, January 30, 2011. I have been in previous years and have enjoyed a wide array of cycling films.

This year's selection is topped by a 40-minute film, entitled "Brian Robinson - a Gentlemen Cyclist". It includes previously unseen footage of Robinson who won two stages of the Tour and finished 14th in the 1956 edition.

Other films include a portrait of Shay Elliott (no relation to our Keith), a film of the 1953 Tour of Britain and archive film of racing at Herne Hill track.

The programme starts at 1.45pm and I would imagine it is vital to book in advance!

This Tuesday (21 December) is the Willeden CC's annual Christmas Party, starting around 7:00pm in the WCC's club room in London Road, Wembley.

Santa will be making his annual visit to the club bringing us presents and to wish us all a happy Christmas. He will be hoping to see us all there.

Paris-Brest-Paris

PBP is one of the oldest events in cycling and probably the most prestigious in the world that the average cyclist can enter, with cheering spectators right along the course. Whether you’re a newbie or a grizzled ancien or ancienne, now is the time to start thinking about the next event, which is on August 21-25^th 2011. About 20 WCCers have taken part in the last few PBP’s, can we better that in 2011?

It’s simple - all you have to do is ride a little over 1200km in no more than 90 hours, all stops included. Most of us who do it are neither especially young nor especially fit and complete the ride with a bit to spare. There is an official PBP website in English which gives details.

Ready for the off in 2007

Willesden CC organises a qualifying series and provides support (Support team members needed!) to its riders during the event.

Help is also needed for the qualifiers, especially the Beast from the East, which needs a team to help with the sleep stop in Yeovil. If you do help an event, you can ride it on a nearby date as a PBP qualifier.

Qualifying

You have to qualify by doing four rides, one each of 200, 300, 400 and 600km between January and June at an average 15kph. As numbers have reached the limit that the organisers can handle, there will be national entrant quotas set for the first time in 2011. Riders who have done a pre-qualifying ride in 2010 of 200km or more will get priority, but it is likely that the UK quota will be large enough for anyone to enter who wants to. The quotas will be announced in early 2011. You will also need to take out membership of Audax UK

Willesden CC’s qualifying rides are:

200K The Willy Warmer. Starting from Chalfont St Peter 07:30 22nd January 2011. Across the Chilterns & Newbury Downs. A revised route this year for an even nicer and easier 'ride round ride' to bank those winter miles to: Chalfont-Pangbourne-Lambourne-Kingsclere-Winnersh and Chalfont. Organiser Paul Stewart.

If you want to ride the 200K and attend the Annual Dinner, which is on the same day, please contact Paul about riding it on the 15^th January. (The 100K Little Willie, run the same day, finishes in plenty of time).

300K The 3Down. Starting from Chalfont St Peter 06:00 2nd April 2011 Across the Chilterns, down the Test Valley, across the New Forest and then turning back. Controls at: Chalfont St Peter-Pangbourne-Kimbridge-Fordingbridge-Linwood-Sparsholt-Winnersh -Chalfont St Peter. Hilly stretches alternate with long flatter intervals, making this ride suitable for trying a big distance the first time. Organiser Ian Oliver

400K The Severn Across. Starting from Chalfont St Peter 06:00 30th April 2011. Severn Across takes in the Cotswolds, the Forest of Dean and the spectacular ride across the Severn Bridge before a stretch of night riding. Not flat, but only a few serious hills. Organiser Chris Beynon

600K The Beast from the East. Starting from Waltham Abbey, Essex, 06:00 28th May. To Taunton and back over Salisbury plain. Tracy & Di’s award winning catering at Streatley Hill and Middle Wallop, sleep facilities and high-quality refreshment in Yeovil will help power you to the finish of this great tester for PBP. The food at the start and end and these three stops is included in the fee. Organiser Mark Brooking.

There will be awards to riders who finish all four events.

Audax -RRTYA campaign

Yesterday Mark Brooking and Wendy mears completed their Randonnee Round the Year Award (riding a 200km ride each month of the year). Mark's summary of their last few rides follows.

September saw Wendy score first with the Beech Hill 200, later in the same month she accompanied Mark and Jim Mears on the Hauxton 200. It only rained non-stop for half the day and the route was very well thought out with some superb café controls.

October saw the Wendy-Mark duo return to Great Dunmow for a repeat of the 'Dick Turpins Day out' permanent ride. It was a lot easier to ride without the snow & sub zero temperatures of the previous edition in January.

November, Wendy went up to Cheshire for the 'Eureaka' a superb event with two brilliant café controls. Being at the tail end of the field Wendy had ample warning of the black ice on the course. Three rider broke bones on that day. Our hero completed the ride unscathed. On the same day Mark rode the Manningtree perm starting from Saffron Walden. Start time was carefully planned to get to Wally's for breakfast. Deniece Davidson met Mark there and acted as a local guide for the end section. A worthwhile event that was all over by 18:00.

A seasonal reminder

December looked grim with snow & freezing conditions prospects were not good. We had both entered the Great Kingshill 200. The organiser worked out an alternative route using treated roads which we chose to use. As there was no ice on Sunday morning we gave it a go. Progress was good until we hit the Surrey hills where there was plenty of snow. Luckily it wasn't on the road and the interminable climb up to Hindhead was painfully slow. We made it to Alton with minutes to spare and chose to use the remaining daylight to get off the high ground and make a dash for Twyford. The last 23 miles took Two and a half hours. The killer climb through Skirmett & Fingest to Boulters End was murder as the frost began to grip the verges.

We finished the last "Scary Bakewells" and froze on the long decent into Wycombe. Soon to warm up on the climb back up to Great Kingshill where a warm welcome awaited.

Wendy was presented with a special (chocolate) medal on a Willesden Green Ribbon. Jim very kindly Chauffeured us home for a well earned glass of bubbly. Both of my water bottles had frozen at the finish. Job done - a new challenge for 2011 calls…………………

At least thirty WCC riders have faced the timekeeper at least once to ride a time trial this year, many of them for the first time.

In the West London Combine we had 51 entries across the 8 events – over 10% of the total. This made us the third most active club. We did, however, have problems supplying our fair share of marshals – a big thank you to Gladys and Ron Purdy and Chris James for stepping forward. Next year please support these events that supply so many local rides for the team.

After last season’s re-writing of the record books by Meurig James (and his subsequent decamping to the USA) it was difficult to see where the fast rides were going to come from this season. Step forward Peter Dixon. Despite having limited opportunity to race, Peter rode personal best after personal best. He won events and placed well in several more. Let’s hope he can continue to thrive next season. He finished the season with PBs of 20:27 for ‘10’, 54:40 for ‘25’, 1:57:04 for ‘50’ and 4:16:48 for ‘100’.

Gill Reynolds mounted another successful, season-long campaign. She won many ladies and vets prizes and competed in national championships and national series events.

Peter Cookson’s season was curtailed by illness, but not before he’d broken the hour for ‘25’ again and placed well in other events.

Stuart Birnie rode sparingly but was always competitive. He rode a ‘100’ in his training shoes – an episode so bizarre that it was featured in Cycling Weekly. He was once again king of the hill climbs with a good performance at the Rollapaluza Urban Hill Climb and a winning ride in the club hill climb championship.

Simon Wicks looked as if he would challenge Stuart through the season after some fast early rides, but decided to end his season early. Jayne Paine’s season focus was elsewhere, but she rode some early season ‘10’s to help hone her form.

Brian Moon rode some early season events but his form wasn’t there. He stopped competing early on to get his health sorted out. Chris James was also dissatisfied with his early season form and finished his season early. I hope you’re both back in training for next year, guys. Ron Purdy persisted throughout the season, but didn’t race that often this year.

Tony Flynn came back to TT’ing with a bang this season, posting some fine results in club events and a few open events.

The road team – Richie Jerome, Rich Cooper and John Williams – rode TTs sparingly this year. I suspect they’re sandbagging in order to wipe up the handicap awards next season.

There were some strong performances from first timers. Chloe Aitken recorded a 26:29 for her first ‘10’. Harmeet Dhiraj produced a 32:40 for ‘10’ and a 1:26:49 for ‘25’. Her sister Balneet returned a 31:05 for a ‘10’ at Hillingdon. Strong man Tom London rode several of the Westerley ‘10’s at Hillingdon with a fastest time of 25:18. Bea Geraghty’s season’s best was 30:43. Kathryn Fairhurst debuted at the spectacular Blenheim Palace closed road TT – how will she follow that?

At the Old Crocks ‘10’ Tim Burrows won the trophy and Jenny Wright took the ladies handicap trophy. Brian Wright, Alan Gallacher and Jim McKay also made rare appearances against the clock.

Russell O’Malley didn’t ride too many TTs, but he was strong when he did ride. He seems to enjoy the ‘50’s. A few other riders have ridden across the radar: Joe Foley and Chris Vesey rode events through the year. Terry Deere rode one of the new Richmond Park TTs and Ludovica Bruno rode an open ‘25’.

So there’s lots to build on for next season. But we need a new Time Trial Secretary as I am leaving the area. The job involves co-ordinating entries and a few marshals for the Combine events. It requires you to keep a record of rides through the season to help decide who wins the trophies. It also gives you the opportunity, if you choose, to run an event. I do think the club should be organising a quality open race with the number of testers we have competing.

It would be great if there was a definitive list of trophies, together with a set of criteria for winning them. This way we could monitor progress through the season and encourage people to compete for season long competitions.

Palaces, Paths, Parks & a Puncture

A small group assembled at Kew Bridge this morning for a Brian Moon Special - Thames Paths, Royal Palaces and Parks. Sights along the way included the spot where Marc Bolan hit a tree on Barnes Common, ending a promising career, and the 4s Heads of the River rowing event. My new cross bike got a bit filthed on the paths and will need cleaning.

A passing runner stopped to take our picture on Kew Bridge, in dry weather. After battling through hordes of joggers, walkers and some lunatic chaps on MTBs racing along the river path shouting at rowing boats to row faster, the first stop was the London Wetlands Centre ("Once Bittern, Twice Shy" Mr B. Moon).

More muddy paths to Fulham Palace, summer retreat for Bishops of London (not two football clubs) now serving coffee and a wide range of nice cakes at prices the clergy would have applauded for the impoverishing qualities. Mr Raymond Kelly then stopped for a spot of medieval fowntaine abuse (for the camera).

Then a fast run down a less muddy but more filthy path to Hampton Court. By now I had an attractive brown stripe at the rear, like a negative of a badger. Time to stop for pumpkin soup in the high class cafe with the leather chairs. Luckily the gents had a dryer turning it into a virtual laundromat, at least for the 'waterproof'. Then back through Richmond Park and Bushy Park with the deer ignoring us.

A great day out - something very different and really enjoyable.

Brian Wright passes on instructions to pupils at Field End Junior School

Cycling Coach Brian Wright has been shortlisted for the 2010 Participation Coach of the Year Award.

Brian has worked tirelessly, and continues to do so at nearly 70-years-old, to launch cycling clubs for all sections of society, whether male or female, young or old.

After establishing Hillingdon Slipstreamers as one of the leading junior cycling clubs in London throughout the past 12 years, more recently he has been heavily involved in nurturing the skills of young people at Field End Junior School as well as women and girls through Minet Ladies Cycling Club.

Many of the women at Minet – which thrives on a diverse multi-cultural mix – are new to the sport, but Brian has worked hard on getting them into cycling, while developing their skills and interest further though engaging training sessions on a weekly basis. He also instigates more specific training programmes for one-off events which can be competitive events, but are more commonly charity rides or sportive challenges.

Brian, who is a qualified Club Coach Level 2 Road and Time Trial Coach and a Level 2 Track Coach, has been instrumental in starting an after-school cycling club from scratch at Field End and his efforts have helped bring the completion of a 340 metre circuit at the school in October. The track has already been used for inter-school competitions, while Field End itself now has an established Go-Ride after school club.

The completion of the track is by no means the end of Brian’s ambitions with Field End, though, with plans to establish the school as a centre of excellence in place through extending current facilities such as mechanical workshops and changing rooms. The plan is also to open the track to community clubs with the erection of a security fence ensuring school safety is not compromised.

British Cycling’s Coaching, Education and Development Director John Mills, was present at the opening ceremony in October to not only present the school with a Go-Ride Racing jersey signed by several of Great Britain’s top stars, but also congratulate and recognise the efforts of Brian in the development of such a commendable project.

“Everything that Field End Junior School has achieved has to be congratulated,” Mills said.

“The efforts of all involved have been nothing short of remarkable, and they exemplify British Cycling’s ideals for sustainable development in the sport through strengthening school and community links.

“Through Brian’s high-quality coaching and infectious enthusiasm, the pupils are getting an invaluable introduction to our sport that will hopefully stay with them for a long time.”

Women Only Training - Hillingdon 14, 28 Nov 10

The sessions are aimed at women riders who:

Jayne wins World Masters Silver and Bronze Medals

Jayne Paine has been competing in the World Masters Track Championships in Portugal.

In the Indvidual Pursuit she narrowly missed out on the Gold medal taking the Silver with a time of 2:40 (2:39 in qualifying) for the 2000m.

In the Sprint final she finished 4th and in the 500m she finished 5th. She was disappointed with a failed bid to light up the Scratch Race, but we've just found out that in the final event, the Points Race, she won the Bronze Medal. Well done Jayne.

Simon Doughty at 50

On behalf of Simon's family I would like to thank the members of Willesden Cycling Club who kindly sent cards for his fiftieth birthday on Sunday 17th Oct.

I have to admit that Simon was on good form that day and thoroughly enjoyed the presents and celebrations laid on at Roland House for him.

People who knew Simon I'm sure understood his slightly off centre humour, needless to say that on his birthday he informed the family that he was still a Spring Chicken

even at the age of fifty.

I will also try and get an updated photograph of Simon for your website.

Go-Ride races for Novice riders -30/10 and 13/11

On Saturdays, 30th October and 13th November, The Willesden Cycling Club are organising Go-Ride races for novice youth riders.

The events take place at The Hillingdon Cycle Racing Circuit, Springfield Road Hayes and will commence at 13.00. Signing on from 12.30.

The event is open to all youth riders below 16 years old. Please bring a bike and helmet plus warm clothing. There will be refreshments available for a small charge.

Entry fee is £1.00 per child.

There will be three races for each rider to take part in. A one lap time trial, a circuit race and a cyclo- cross race. Distances for the latter two races will be suitable for the various age groups.

Prizes for winners and certificates for all.

The sun will shine, bad weather in October and November is unheard of.

LVRC - Bronze for Jayne Paine

Jayne update from the weekend's action at the LVRC track champs.

Racing against men aged 55-65, she got a bronze in the points (would have won, but they only gave ten points for taking a lap, not 20); fourth in the pursuit, missing bronze by a fraction; top six in the scratch, 500m and 200m (PBs in those two).

A pretty good weekend. Next week, the World Masters in Portugal. Go Jayne.

Ray Kelly is planning a mega turbo training season from now until next Spring to lay down an excellent foundation for your 2011 racing campaign.

Doors open at the WCC's club house at 7:30pm for set-up/warm-up.
The full one hour coaching session starts at 8:00pm - no mercy will be shown.

NB: The disgraced England football team will be "playing" at Wembley tomorrow night (now that will really be torture!). So the session may start a little later - just get there when you can.

TT Report, the Hill Climb and food

Kathryn Fairhurst and Gill Reynolds rode the Blenheim Palace closed road circuit TT at the weekend and finished only 2 seconds apart. Kathryn recorded a 39:21 and Gill a 39:23. Fastest was Rebecca Slack (London Dynamo) with 31:37.

Tomorrow is the closing date for the West London Combine hill climb on Windsor Hill. The race is on Sunday 17th October, first rider 9.30am. If you want to enter, let me know.

HOWEVER, the club hill climb championship clashes with it, so you’ll probably want to ride that instead.

It’s part of a Westerley CC fun day out…

9:00am: First rider off in a 2-up ‘10’ on the HCC180 at Great Missenden. So far we have entries from Brian Wright / Nici Savage, Ian and Annie Birch and me. You can enter on the line, but it would be nice to know who will be there.

11:30am Westerley CC Hill Climb incorporating the 2010 Willesden CC International All Stars Hill Climb Championship. Entries so far: Reigning Champeen and club 106 mile shoeless TT Champion Stuart Birnie (Australia) and me (England/Wales). More please.

Update on Simon Doughty

We've had an update on the condition of Simon from his brother, Mark. It's good to hear that he's progressing well.

I am Simon Doughty's brother and just by chance I spied your web site. I am sending this email as an update to members past and present who knew Simon. Looking at you web site picture of Simon and the information I would think this is very likely to be substantially out of date.

As of Oct 2010 we are nearly four years on from when Simon suffered his life sustaining injuries in Manchester. These have been four very long years both for Simon and his family although there is a great deal of light at the end of the tunnel for us all.

In the usual Simon fashion he has proved the medical world was wrong in its prognosis and is still making progress, although Simon will always require 24/7 medical and care attention he seems so much brighter in many aspects of his daily life. He can for example now happily watch television and will be able to inform you of for example who is the American President or who won the cricket series between Pakistan and England. He visits London to view pictures at Tate Modern and also attends painting classes at a centre in New Maldean, he is also a keen cook and goes out with assistance to gain the ingredients from a local super market.

Simon's speech for so long a frustrating point for all concerned, he will happily read magazines or newspapers with help and conversation can be made on a wide variety of topics and interests, of course cycling is still his first love and very recently he went to Docklands to see the final of The Tour of Britain and he seemed to enjoy the VIP treatment and day out.

Simon's birthday is on October 17th and he will be fifty this year it would be nice if people who knew Simon might like to send him a birthday card, Simon has not lost his sense of humour so I'm sure he would appreciate any cards sent.

Willesden CC at the Track Nationals - 2

Bunty sent the following txt to her adoring fans last night ....

"Well, the 15K scratch kicked off hard for the first 5K then eased up to a fairly pedestrian speed. The bunch stayed together. I never really got into a good position. I moved up with three laps to go to the front on the outside - neck and neck with three of the best.

The gallop went with just under two laps to go and they all galloped past me, the buggers. It was a good race and I really enjoyed it - I finished in the bunch, which was what I wanted.

I've learned some lessons, humility being amongst them! A big girl won it and a couple of smaller ones came second and third."

Jayne Paine is competing at the UK National Track Championships in Manchester this week. Yesterday she took part in the Points race with some impressive riders for company. Unfortunately she dropped out after 40 laps, feeling some what underpowered. Still all the more energy for her other races today, I say!

Save Herne Hill Campaign

I'm planning to write an article in support of the Save Herne Hill Velodrome campaign and would love any photos that Willesden CC members may have from Herne Hill - obviously, the more historic, the better.

These could be of people racing or watching races; of the stand, the pavilion (is that what it's called?), the tea room, the bike sheds - anything that gives a flavour of the place over the years.

I'd love to produce a really evocative article that reminds people of why Herne Hill Velodrome is so special and why we should support the campaign to save it.

Tandem partner wanted

I ride out with Angus Huntley, who is blind, on his tandem. We do weekend rides and 100km Audaxes. It's good fun riding with him and gives you a new perspective on cycling. Sometimes I can't do it because of other commitments or, like now, because of an injury. Would another Willesden member like to ride with Angus sometimes too? The only qualifications are that you will need to be 5foot 7in - 6foot 1in or so to fit on the tandem and are able to get to Harrow Weald where he lives without too much hassle. This weekend the Willesden CC are organising the John and Dulcie Walker Road Races.

This is one of the most important events on our calendar and we need all club members to come along and Marshall this event. Don't even think of going on the club ride - that's been canceled too.

Rich Jerome is organising the races and he needs us to to be at the event's HQ for about 8:30am. We will then be allocated our duties. The address of the HQ is -

Only two reports in as I write...

On Saturday I rode the ...a3crg '10' finishing with a disappointing 24:30. The winner was Stephen Whitewick of UTAG Yamaha.com in 19:45.

Gill Reynolds rode the Icknield Road Club '10' on Sunday finishing in 25:46 as the fastest lady.

Coming up...

Sunday 3rd October sees the season's final event on the fast H25/2 at Marlow. It's organised by the VTTA London and Home Counties.

Ian Why - The King of Spanners

Ian Why is a hero....

On yesterday's Sky Ride the stem on Vyv's bike sheared as she was approaching St Paul's Cathedral. As she was practicing her slow speed bike handling skills (she does this a lot!), the plunge earthwards was at a sedate pace.

Fist bit of luck was that we agreed to lunch at "Look Mum no Hands", just a short walk from St Pauls.

Second bit of luck....."LMNH" were holding a sale of scrap iron, which some cyclists see as jewels of bedazzling beauty. For £3, a dusty pair of bars and a quill stem were bought. Next followed a blur of a Allen keys, punctuated with hammer blows as Ian Why set about replacing the bars and stem. What a fine job he did too, even replacing the bar tape!!

Having also bust her sturdy tourer the previous weekend Vyv is now considering opening a cafe called "Look Mun No Handle bars".

Ian, thank you once again for saving the day and thank you also to the helpful mechanic at "LMNH" who kindly let us her tools.

Gladys writes: Yesterday was Nick Tidmarsh's 100th birthday. Nick was a founder member of the Willesden Socialist C.C., the forerunner of the Willesden C.C. He disappeared off the scene after his marriage and developed an interest in amateur dramatics forming the Tithe Farm Players. He rejoined the club in 1982 when his son Brian became a member. He took up timetrialling and was riding well into his 80's.For many year's he was the Secretary of the Old Timers Section. He regularly attends meetings and is always at annual club dinner. Several club members were present to enjoy the excellent Hog Roast he provided at the Tithe Farm Social club yesterday and to wish him a Happy Birthday.

Times for Sunday's West London Combine event. Peter Dixon 58:18 also taking the handicap. Gill Reynolds 1:11:08. Richard Jerome and Rich Cooper rode separately: 1:06:37 and l:08:37. Gill rode in the Reading 10 on Saturday taking 2nd fastest lady in 26:48.

Second claim Life Member, Paul Doel became the LVRC Champion of Region 9 in the Road Race at Blackmore in Essex after breaking away with Brendan Smith of the Kenton and beating him in the sprint when they were over a minute in front of the main field.

Wendy and Mark were riding another 200Km I believe this weekend.

Jayne Paine writes: I came 2nd in the National Women's Omnium in Scunthorpe on Saturday. This leaves me lying in 3rd place in the series behind Emma Patterson and Nikki Meadows. With only one more to go (Reading, next Saturday), Emma Patterson cannot be beaten and is the National Women's Omnium Champion 2010. It is unlikely I can knock Nikki off 2nd place on the podium, unless my skill with an air rifle gets considerably better. My main worry is the herd of hungry children nibbling at my heels for the bronze. I may have to resort to pedalling fast: an unpopular tactic, but these are desperate times.

Mark and Wendy continue their quest for the Audax Round the Year Randonneur award. For added challenge they decided to go for a 300km event for August's ride. Here's Mark's report and photos.

The Mildenhall Rally was the start point for a 300km East Anglian Diagonal.
Mark, Jim and Wendy stayed over at Barton Mills Travelodge - a few miles from the start.

We had a quick look around the Rally site - it was not yet in full swing but was pretty busy on the Friday. Having located the start point we Adjourned to the Blue Bell for some sustenance. Wendy had a bottle of red all to herself to ensure a good (short) nights rest.

Multiple alarms went off at 03:00 and Mark scoffed half a kilo of Tesco pasta salad before waking up properly.

Bags packed in the car we rode to the start Jim had decided to ride with us but (he sensibly diverted back to base after 50km in the cold darkness of predawn).

There were quite a few takers for the longest ride of the day. As usual after the start a blistering pace developed to the first control at 28km (into a headwind).
After turning and with a favourable wind we pedalled into the sunrise with other riders for company on an occasional basis.

At Breakfast time we said goodbye to Jim and shared a sandwich after a stretch of flooded roads in the forest. It was 70 miles to the first sit down feed at Diss - we couldn’t quite make it without a top up.

It was a comfortable ride after the dawn chill evaporated - Blackberry and apple pie at Bungay Butter Cross Café slid down well a mere 20 miles further on than breakfast.
We had a short ferry crossing at Reedham before a headwind slog to the boat station at Ranworth.(214km) Wendy's first sub 11 hour 200 !

The next section showed evidence of the heavy rain that was to come and the ride up the coast to the next control was straight against
a very strong coastal breeze. Jonets café at Mundesley was a welcome sight!

Here a small groupetto formed and decided not to go for the optional control at Cromer but to head west to rejoin the route which at this point was already over distance. We all got caught in a heavy downpour with no cover which dampened the spirits.

The garden centre at the next checkpoint was closed but a general store provided proof of passage. So off into the gloom for the last leg which was also one of the longest and most remote.

We found Craig (riding his first 300) trying to make adjustments to cater for a broken spoke and helped out and stayed together to the end. He had a GPS system and the last 20km on the route sheet was actually 40! Not good news on a small forest lane in the dark looking for a left fork after a crossroads. Craig started to bonk - so Wendy plied us all with Jelly Babies which proved to be just enough to get us back.

Mildenhall was a welcome relief - the route we had followed was 328km - a bit over the top.We finished at 23:10 - many thanks to the controllers who were still on duty when we arrived.

Thanks to Jim for driving us home afterwards and for support on the later stages of the ride. Next time two nights at the site would be a good idea.

4 more 200's to go and we should get the award…………………………..

Racing report - August Bank Holiday weekend

Saturday
Gill Reynolds rode the Victoria CC '10.2' on the E1. It's a slightly long, 'country lanes' course - not a drag strip. She did a 28:07. The winner was Alex Dowsett in an amazing 19:47.

At Hillingdon we had four riders in the 38 mile E123 event at the circuit. John Williams was gapped by an early crash and decided to save himself for the Monday race. Richie Jerome, Rich Cooper and Tom London all finished in the main group.

Sunday
Westerley CC organised two TTs over the Bank Holiday. The first was a '25' on the H25/2 course from Marlow. It was a cool and breezy day. Peter Dixon rode well for his 56:51 and 11th place. I did a 1:03:52. The winner was Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) in 51:57.

Monday
The Squadra Verde are riding the Kenton RC circuit races at Hillingdon - full results later.

** EDIT ** Jayne Paine won the women's race from a quality field. On FB she said "[I won] £20 ! And a trophy! Terry Cronin circuit race at Hilingdon - not a bad field - 15 women. Charlotte Blackman, Emma Patterson, Natalie Hill, Maryka Semena... If the finish line had been 10 feet further away, I might have come last!". Jayne explained her victorious training methods: "you need beer: we're all on it in the Willesden. Our DS, Richard Jerome, insists we include it in our daily diets during race season. And pies."

The other Squadra were at Marlow for the Westerley's second event - a '10' on the H10/22. If anything the morning was even cooler than the day before. The breeze was a headwind coming back and almost negated the effect of the descents towards the finish. Peter Dixon was again fast with a 22:16 for fourth place. I did a 24:46, Gill Reynolds a 26:13 and Tony Flynn a 25:16. We were second fastest team. The winner was Peter Weir (Maidenhead and Dist CC) in 21:22.

Peter picked up second prize in the combined classification for both events, finishing with a time of 1:19:07 behind Dave Johnson's (VC10) 1:18:17.

Next Sunday is the West London Combine '25' on the HCC114 (Great Missenden). I'll let you have the starting order as soon as I get it. A second breakfast at the Deep Mill Diner after the event?

FAQs

How will the points system work?

Well, if there are 20 riders are in your age category, for example, then the winner gets 20 points while the second-placed finisher gets 19 points and so on all the way down to the one point earned by the rider finishing in 20th place. That means everyone counts. You all pick up points for your club.

If there were 15 riders in the next age category, say, then the points on offer would range from 15 down to 1.

So the more riders we come with, the better our chances?

Exactly.

In all, there will be prize money of £300 for us, but how is it split out?

The £300 is split between £220 for the age groups Under 12, Under 10 and Under 8 leaving the £80 balance for the riders competing in the Under 16 and Under 14 age groups.

OK. How will the £220 be split?

The top three clubs will share in the total:

first: £150
second: £40
third: £30

What is there for the two older categories: U14 and U16?

Last year it was chaotic running five age groups at once, so splitting everyone between two races should make life easier for Steve May and his team of eagle-eyed judges who have to do the totting up.

In the three youngest categories, riders tend to split and finish individually, so that’s not bad to judge.

However the U14 and U16 get tactical and often finish in a packs and that’s why Steve has asked for them to be allocated to different races, so we have U14 in the first race and U16 in the following event…please note they are not both in the second race!!

What do they stand to collect?

What a week

The Squadra Verde has been tearing round Italy in the Mille Miglia – thanks to John Davies for the regular updates and to the official Web site for round-the-clock time checks. We await a considered report by the participants – We want to hear about dusky Mediterranean maidens, miraculously reinvigorating espressos, ice cream parlours to die for and the many more hallucinations that can be brought on by sleep deprivation and unnatural physical discomfort.

Meanwhile the testers were suffering from statistical overload after Wednesday’s last Westerley CC Hillingdon Circuit TT of the season (report here).

On Friday the WCC (and half the population of North and West London) were at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit for the Minet Ladies Cycling Club 1,000 lap charity ride. Over 70 riders turned up and we knocked of the 1,000 laps in about 90 minutes. 1,895 laps (that’s over 1,750 miles) were covered in total and hundreds of pounds were raised for a local charity.

Saturday was the club Track Championships at Welwyn organised by Tony Woodford with help from Steve May. It was a warm, dry afternoon for the eleven participants. After four events Tom London was crowned as men’s champion, Jayne Paine as the women’s champion, Kirsten Savage as under 16 girl’s champion and Connor Woodford as under 16 boys champion. Hat to all the riders.

While the be-sequined trackstars were riding round in circles the road squad were… riding round in circles at Hillingdon. No report in yet.

Gill Reynolds rode the Team Sanjan 10m TT near Cambridge recording a 25:46 in windy conditions. Fastest on the day was Ashley Cox of Team Corley Cycles in 20:12.

Sunday dawned early for Peter Dixon and Joe Foley at the Oxonian ‘50’ near Kingston Bagpuss. In tough conditions Peter came a fine fourth with 1:57:55. Joe did a 2:36:41. The winner was Jesse Elzinga (Beeline Bicycles RT) in 1:52:57.

The team bus took the biggest team of the weekend to the Old Crocks’ ‘10’ organised by Hillingdon CC at Great Missenden. Tim Burrows won the Old Crocks’ Trophy on handicap with a ride of 26:30. Jenny Wright won the Ladies Handicap Trophy with a 40:07. Other rides were: Brian Wright 31:29, Ron Purdy 32:11, Jim McKay 28:17, Alan Gallacher 29:29, and Lance Woodman (private trial) 25:03. Potential new member Chloe Aitken produced a fine debut ride on her road bike of 26:29. It was good to see so many WCC supporters out as well. Fastest on the day was a private trial by Peter Smith of 22:35.

Mel, Ian and Peter have now reached the finish line in Nerviano. Well done guys - a really gritty effort.

Mel and Peter arrived back last night between 9pm and 10pm. Ian was enjoying it so much he decided to spend a little longer on the road finishing at 01:22 am this morning.

Mille Miglia - Day 5

Martin Lucas is the first British rider to finish the 2010 Mille Miglia. Well done Martin - an excellent ride.

Martin nipped around the 1625km course in 89hr:15mm arriving back in Nerviano (near Milan) at 2:16 PM (CET) yesterday afternoon. He was the 15th finisher out of an entry 269 riders.

I am waiting for the organisers to upload more results to the web site. So as of this morning I do not have an update for Ian Oliver, Peter Turnbull and Mel Kirkland.

Mille Miglia - Day 4

This morning's news is that Martin Lucas is the first British rider to arrive at the Casella Ligura control at 1436kms!! At this rate Martin should be back in his hotel bed this evening.

Ian Oliver, Peter Turnbull and Mel Kirkland are making steady progress. They checked through the the 995km control, near Sienna, yesterday evening.

Still no sign of Ray Kelly or Akiko Kawachi - it is looking as though they have packed somewhere on the outward leg down to near Rome.

At 21.49 Italian time last night the first rider, Silvano Riccò, was first to arrive back at the start. He rode the 1625km course in 73 hours. Chapeau, or should that be Capello to Silvano for an excellent ride.

Westerley mid-week 10m TT

Normally this article would be part of the weekly TT report, but we've been given a shed load of data so I thought that I'd offer some analysis for the riders.

Last night was the last of the Westerley CC Wednesday 10s at the Hillingdon Circuit. The races are 11 laps (so actually about 10.35 miles). This year's innovation has been the use of transponder technology which helps count the laps and gives intermediate splits. So now we can tell how even each rider's pace is.

Last night's event was won by Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) in 21:43 (21:00 equivalent for 10mls). Our own Peter Dixon was second with 23:18 (22:32). Other Willesden rides were Tom London 25:31 (24:41), Lance Woodman 27:18 (26:25), Bea Geraghty with a PB of 30:43 (29:43) and Balneet Dhiraj, also with a PB, 31:05 (30:04).

Balneet probably rode 20 laps before she decided that she might just have completed the distance!

The summary table below shows fastest, slowest, difference and average (mean) lap times together with the standard deviation from the mean. The lower the standard deviation, the smoother the pacing - something to aim for in time trialling.

Mille Miglia - Day 3

So far Martin Lucas is the only Willesden rider to have passed through the Bolsena Control at 776 kms. The section down to here from Florence is a tough one with plenty of climbing. Martin should now be heading back to the Sienna control at 995km.

The Bolsena control may have now closed as we are now out of the time limit, so far only 180 out of 269 starters have officially passed through this control. However our riders may be pressing on towards the Sienna Control at 995km in the hope they can catch up some time.

Julian Holden has "packed" on the event and the following is a posting he made on the YACF Audax forum ....

Suppose I'd better tell my tale of shame before the heroic completion ride reports get in.

Fast start at about 21:30 but the pace was too high for me and I fell off the back of my group at about 77km. Got to the first control (102km) at 12:55. Lit out again and was caught up by a Toothgrinder/Judith Swallow groupetto, who I presume must have waited to finish dinner etc, before starting and rode with them for about 10k before dropping off the back again. I was clocking around 26km/h solo and was very happy with that.

I was one of the last to the second control (186km) at about 4:55. Grabbed a coffee from the bar and headed off. Saw 200k at about 6:05 and dawn soon after. Spent rather too long riding into the rising sun, hoping passing trucks would see me, and made the third control and first food stop (268km) at 9:30. Stayed there until 10:10 to recover.

The wheels rather fell off my enterprise in this stage. I was Ok for the first 60km but then started to feel very tired. This stage is (with apologies to our Italian hosts) dull. It is dead flat with straight roads. It's sunny, fortunately I don't think it was more than about 26C yesterday as shade is rare. The area is nearly all intensively cultivated so there's not many places to stop to grab a sleep in peace.Every 30 seconds a huge truck filled with fruit blasts past you enroute to Europe's supermarkets. It was getting close to 17:00 before I arrived in Faenza (388km).

I felt like death and the controllers suggested I got a quick sleep. I had a lie down for 30 mins but couldn't sleep so headed off again although I knew that with the way I was going and the speed that I climb I was unlikely to make make Dicomano much before the cutoff so would not have much time for sleep there before the next climb. After about 500m down the road it was clear that I was having trouble focussing and that proceeding any further without sleep was looking for trouble so got off the bike.

So the moral of this story is... Sometimes riding on the flat is harder than riding hills. Seems that I've spent all Spring playing around with gearing and practising riding hills on hot days when I should have been on the fens working on my boredom threshold.

Meanwhile the megafast groupetto of five Italian riders has now reduced to three. They continue to rip up the route and passed through the 995km control averaging just under 24 kph (including all time off the bike).

Mille Miglia - Day 2

All of the Willesden riders with the exception of Julian Holden have now passed through the Dicomano control (near Florence) at 473km. Martin Lucas was in the top twenty riders and 3rd UK rider to reach this point yesterday.

A group of five Italian riders are having a storming ride having almost reached the half way point of the ride in just under 31 hours (av. 25kph including stops).

Minet Park Ladies club to ride 1000 laps for charity

THE Minet Ladies Cycle Club are saddling up for a fundraising cycle ride this friday. The charity bike ride will take place at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in Minet Country Park, in Springfield Road, Hayes, on August 20, between 1.30-4.30pm.

The riders will attempt to complete a combined total of 1000 laps of the circuit on the day, and the money raised will go towards children's disability charity, The Acorn Youth Club.

The Minet Ladies are hoping to recruit more riders to help with the effort. Everyone is welcome, and it costs £2 to sign up.

Audax - Mille Miglia

A number of our Audax riders are taking part in the 1600km Mille Miglia Audax ride in Italy. The route runs down from Milan to a point just north of Rome and back again, oh... and there is the odd moutain or twenty along the way.

I will update the blog each morning with the progress of our riders. They started last night (Moday 16th Aug) and this was the order in which they departed Milan.

Mark rode his 31st Dorset Coast - its becoming a bit of a habit now! Then Mark & Wendy went to ride the Witham westerly - another visit to Wallys café and Wendys first sub 12 hour ride. A gent relying on GPS technology passed us in several directions very close to the finish thue ensuring that we weren’t last!

May

Mark rode the Hop Garden event in Kent - It took as long as the dorset Coast and was almost as hilly!
Wendy came back from a trip to america and slipped in "The Anoracks Delight" just before the end of the month.

June

Wendy rode the "Taste of the Test" permenant with Jim.
Mark was inveted up to Edinburgh to ride Sonya's 600km Event - which was a brilliant ride of two loops which sneaked into England before returning to base
and heading across to Loch Lomond & back in the rain.

Mark Went up to Seething Near Norwich with Paul Stewart to spend the Weekend in a field in between frantic bursts of activity on the Seething 600km. He last rode this event in 1991 and was pleased to meet up with Paul & Jaqui Denny who created the event back in the early '80's

August

Wendy is off to ride the Marlborough Connection on the August Bank holiday. Mark and Wendy are also scheduled to try out Wendys new lights on the Anglian 300km Diagonal.

Peter Dixon rode the Kings Lynn CC '25' on the B25/33 and did a 58:31 for a fine fourth place. The event was won by Basil Moss (Cambridge CC) in 56:42.

Sunday
I rode the Bedfordshire Roads CC '25' on the F1b/25 and recorded a 1:2:47. The winner was Matt Bottrill (i-Ride.co.uk) on 50:52.

EDIT: Joe Foley rode the Reading CC '25' at Aldermaston (H25/1) and recorded a 1:13:04. Fastest was Steve Golla (Sigma Sport) with a 54:41.

Saturday 4th September there's a S Bucks RC club '10' on the Maidenhead Thicket course (H10/2) starting at 9am.

Sunday 5th sees the resumption of the West London Combine programme. Bath Road Club are the organisers for a 2-up or solo '25' on the Great Missenden course (HCC114). June Smith, whose husband Ron is a Life member of the club, although she is in the Taw Velo now, won a competition "Living the dream" and went to the Manchester Track to get training. You can see her in action at www.photographer-manchester.uk.com. June's other claims to fame include having been given one of Dave Millar's yellow jerseys and massaging Roger Hammond's legs.

Tom pipped on the line - just

Tom London was second in tonight’s 4th cat circuit race at Hillingdon Circuit. On a rain-drenched night he attacked with a lap to go and only one rider got back to him in the last few metres. Tom reckons there was half a wheel in it on the line.

The points gained earned Tom his third category licence. It’ll be good to see him riding with the rest of the Squadra in the E123 race next week.

In the same race Lance Woodman came nowhere. Again.

In the Westerley '10.4' at the Hillingdon circuit Tony Flynn did a 27:07 and Bea Geraghty recorded a PB 31:41. Malcolm Woolsey of the Westerley was fastest with 24:11. It was a windy night.

Chris Vessey and Ron Purdy travelled to the midweek VTTA '10' at Fifield, but a violent thunderstorm just before the start dissuaded them from starting.

At the Hemel Hempstead '10' Gill Reynolds did a 26:13 and Ron Purdy did a 32:46. Fasest was Jason Gurney (Team Milton Keynes) with 21:00.

Sunday
Peter Dixon rode the Richmond Park 10.4m TT and was 8th fastest on a road bike with a 27:21. The fastest roadie was Xavier Disley of Birmingham Uni with 23:52.

At the Westerley CC club '10' on the HCC109 (Chalfonts) Tony Flynn did a 25:50 and Gill Reynolds a 31:29. Fastest rider was P. Smith (Endura MI Racing) in 23:14.

Jayne wins European Silver (again)

Jayne Paine recorded two lifetime best on her way to a second Silver medal in the European Master Championships at Manchester Velodrome yesterday.

Her bloke posted the following report on Facebook:

She rode a damn near perfect race, but just didn't quite have enough at the end. She and Janet Birkmyre both rode PBs in really good times. Jayne knocked half a second off her PB in qualifying, then took another second and a half off that in the final. Close, but no cigar, I'm afraid - she missed out on gold by 7/10 of a second. Gutting. But very impressive.

Well done, Jayne.

Tony Flynn, Gill Reynolds and I rode the Charlotteville CC '10' on the H10/8 (Bentley). It was a breezy day which made the journey to the turn very hard. The last couple of miles were great though. Tony recorded a 25:13, Gill a 26:02 and I did a 24:36. The winner was Stephen Whitewick (Utag Yamaha.com) with a 20:25.

Sunday
I was the only WCC rider entered for the West London CA '25' on the Marlow ski slope course (H25/2). Unlike the day before it was a still, cool day with perhaps a tailwind finish. I recorded a 59:50 - first time 'under' since August 1980. The winner was Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) in 51:26.

Saturday 21st August is down as the WCC Track Championships at Welwyn. There's also a North Hants RC '25' on the H25/8.

Sunday 22nd: there's an Oxonian CC '50' on the H50/17 and a North Middlesex and Herts CA '25' on the F10/25. There's also the ECCA 12 hour on the E2 if you feel like a longer day out.

Stop press - Jayne gets European Silver

Last night at the European Master track championships Jayne Payne won a Silver medal in the Points race. Her great rival from the UK, Janet Birkmire won the gold.

What makes Jayne's achievement all the more impressive is that they were running all the age groups in one race and she still finished second! Jayne said "It was a hard won race....The race stayed together, despite my attacks and those of the others. I was really pleased with my sprinting, which is famously weak".

Jayne is now preparing for her 2km pursuit this coming Saturday. We all wish you luck Jayne.

Dunwich Dynamo

The Dunwich Dynamo is an annual 120 mile through-the-night ride from Hackney to Dunwich. It's not quite a sportive (no organisation, no entry fee), it's not a race and it's certainly not exclusive. WCC member Tim Burrows rode this week's event. Here is his report:

Left 8.00pm, arrived after 120 miles 4.00 in the morning.

The Dunwich Dynamo started in 1993 when a group of messenger cyclists one Saturday night hacked off down to Dunwich on the Suffolk coast. Having just got back into cycling I hadn't heard about this. I was told about it by a friend who's a bit of a hippie from Camberwell - so I was entirely convinced (image of beans, crystals and pyramids). It wasn't helped by having ridden half the route the previous week when I went to watch the vets road race at Saffron Walden and struggled back home into a head wind.

However this Saturday the weather looked favourable wind SW on Saturday turning round to NW on the Sunday - magic. So I polished my lovely yellow bike - cobbled together some lights, went to 'Tracey's cafe' for some 'carbo loading' and trundled off to Hackney.

Sitting on the green at Hackney I still wasn't convinced and was very close to just turning back home - at 7.00pm there were a reasonable amount of people - but nothing special at 7.45 the numbers grew and the arrival of a character in a Arsenal/Dennis Bergkamp shirt giving out the route details finally got me motivated.

The first few miles me and everyone else were a little jittery - I'd say only one in twenty had a clue in navigation or where they were heading (I went off course after 1/4mile and continued a similar pattern throughout the journey), relying on a few 'leaders' and whistling to fellow stray sheep to get back on course.

People en-route, at roadside pubs, bus stops, front gardens were really friendly and supportive shouting words of encouragement. I think quite a few enjoyed the spectacle,

The only 'lively' moments had been up through Leyton to Epping - crap roads and a few boy-racers - and in Codningham (30 miles from nowhere) a few youths about to get an ASBO by putting a cone in the middle of the road and playing chicken before someone hung out their window and reminded them that 'people were trying to get some sleep'.

As it got dark you really felt the adventure was starting - although the clouds kept out the moon and stars it made it warmer and added to the magical darkness of the next few hours. The roads were twisty and turny, up and down the whole dynamics were constantly changing. Sometimes on your own, sometimes in a group, you could be belting along on your own and starting to feel rather solitary, then you'd feel the glow of a front light coming up behind you or else you may be catching on to a long bobbing trail of flashing rear lights.

Hitting Dunwich was ACE - somehow despite my extra-get-lost miles I was one of the first in the cafe - had a fry-up then hit the beach, found a nice pebbly bit of the beach and using my cash-hat for a pillow curled up for a kip - woke up an hour later to the smell of people cooking bacon on the beach.

By now the beach was getting full - who managed to get fom London to Dunwich? Just about anyone - over a thousand cyclists - tandems, fixies, racers, new bikes, lots of old bikes, one bike which got an extra cheer was a guy on a butchers-bike with his dog on the front - apparently the dog hadn't travelled so well this year and was a bit fidgety.

Well thats another ticked off my list - but definately one I'd love to do again.

Stuart Birnie road the Rollapaluza Urban Hill Climb on Swains Lane. He finished in 47th of the 101 finishers in 1:58.6. The winner was Chris Metcalfe (Matllock CC) in 1:32.9.

At the Westerley CC club '10.3' at Hillingdon on Wednesday evening Tom London rode a 25:38 and I strolled round for a 27:00. Malcolm Woolsey won it in a 23:46.

Peter Dixon and Stuart Birnie rode the Southern Counties CU '100' on the G100/60. Quite a tough course apparently. Peter did an excellent 4:16:18 for 15th place. Stuart did 4:52:20 for 54th place. Stuart rode the event in his daps and even managed to incorporate an extra six miles - read the whole remarkable story, and a report of the hill climb, here. The event was won by Rob Pelham of Lewes Wanderers in 3:52:40.

Gill Reynolds rode the Banbury Star '25' and finished in 1:10:36.

I rode the Verulam CC '25' on the F1/25 and did a 1:01:45.

w/e 15/8 - There a '10' on the E2/10 on the Saturday. On the Sunday there's the Maidenhead and Dist CC '10' on the H10/22 and a '25' on the F1b/25.

Gill Reynolds recorded a 26:26 in the North Hants RC '10' on the H10/8 (Bentley) course. Fastest was Stephen Whitewick (Utag Yamaha.com) with 20:16.

Sunday
Peter Dixon did a 1:57:52 (+20:11) for the VTTA National '50' Championship on the H50/4 (Great Missenden) course - the 3rd fastest ride of the day. Fastest was David Johnson (VC10) in 1:56:00 and the champion was 80+ year old Dennis Milsom with 2:16:24 (+50:56). Joe Foley failed to finish in the accompanying WLCA event which was won by Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy RT) in 1:53:57.

Terry Deere recorded 36:20 at the early morning Richmond Park 10.4 mile TT on his road bike. Fastest on a road bike was Tim Stevens (34th Nomads CC - Gem Hygiene) with 25:50.

I rode the Don Woodman Memorial '25' on the R25/16 (Pandy) course. It was a good day, but the final uphill 10 miles got to me and I recorded a 1:3:14. The winner was Alan Cook from the promoting Ross-on-Wye and Dist CC with a 53:17.

I can't see any opens on Saturday 7th August, but there's a South Bucks RC club '10' on the Maidenhead Thicket (H10/2).

On Sunday 8th there's another London Dynamo Richmond Park TT (closing date 25/7), the Farnham RC 4-up and 2-up '25' on the H25/8 (Bentley) and a Finsbury Park CC '25' on the F1/25.

WANTED: Time Trial Secretary for 2011 season

I've enjoyed being Club TT Secretary this year. Unfortunately I won't be able to continue next year because of other commitments.

So we're looking for a new TT Secretary for 2011. The job involves:

Promoting time trialling and the associated club trophies to club members via the blog and email
Co-ordinating entries to West London Combine events
Drumming up marshals for two of the WLC events
Creating and maintaining a record of riders' best performances to aid the handicapper
Publicising your team mates' performances on the blog and in the magazine
Where possible, attending and reporting to the monthly committee meetings
Maintaining the time trialling pages on the new Web site

None of this has proved too demanding and I will be around until at least March next year to help with a handover if that's required. Are you interested? If you are, please do get in touch for a chat.

I note that the male and male vet categories are currently sold out, but several riders have managed to enter more than once (including Hippy), so places might become available. It'll certainly be an event to go and watch, even if you can't get a ride.

Wednesday night was one of Westerley CC's 11 lap 10.3m TTs at Hillingdon Circuit. Tom London was the fastest Green Machine with 25:18. Harmeet Dhiraj did 32:40 and her sister Balneet did 33:36. The winner was Malcolm Woolsey (Westerley CC) in 23:51.

Saturday
Peter Dixon rode the Antelope RT '10' on the P613 for a PB of 20:27. Mark Jones won the senior event in 19:16 and Alan Cook (Ross-on-Wye and Dist CC) won the vets event in 19:18.

Gill Reynolds rode the Bedfordshire RC '10' (F1b/10) and was first woman with a 25:40.

Peter Cookson went to ride the Oxonian CC '10' on the H10/17R but the event was cancelled because of two RTIs.

Sunday
I rode the National '100' Championships on the B100/5 course near Norwich. The rising headwind put paid to my efforts after 75 miles and I was DNF. The men's event was won by Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-QuickVit) in 3:23:03, just 19 seconds off competition record. Julia Shaw (Utag Yamaha) beat the women's CR with an amazing 3:45:22 - faster than all but six of the men's field.

Coming up...
The last weekend of July sees a Saturday (31/7) '10' on the Bentley course (H10/8) organised by the Charlotteville CC. On Sunday (1/8) there's a rare '25' on the Marlow ski slope (H25/2) organised by the West London CA (WCC are members of the WLCA).

Cycling 'Networking' ride.

I’ve beet talking to a mate of mine, who like me works in PR, about finding an excuse to ride our bikes during the working week and pass it off as working? If people can do it with golf, why can’t we?….

So we’re asking around to see who’ll rock up if we invite keen road cyclists who work in PR and Communications to get together to, ahem, “network and share ideas” on the inaugural Communicators Club Run on Friday 10 September.

We’re planning on a 50K ride at a 20-25kph pace starting from Watford at 10 am. We’ll head out through the Chilterns and have a tea/cake/networking break before getting back to the start at around 1 pm. We’re not planning anything too challenging and will roll at the pace of the slowest rider mostly along quiet lanes.

Trains leave for Watford from Euston and the town is close to the M1 and M25 and not too far from the M40.

Ian Piper writes about The Tour of Exmoor Sportive:

Having never ridden a sportive before this was a whole new experience. The options were 56, 80 or 97 miles, the 56 seemed a bit like bottling out and as I have only averaged 110 miles a week for the last 4 weeks the 97 was out of the question so I opted for the 80. Interesting set up once you have your number and electronic timing chip you can start by just riding off over the timing strip anytime you wanted between 8 and 9am, no groups starting together or anything remotely like a reliability trial. Oddly enough at the event I met a rider from the training camp I went to in Mallorca, we never rode together out there as he was in the fast group and way too fast for me to have any hope of staying with. He was doing the 97 miler with his team mate but I decided that they could be a good back wheel for the first 15 miles until the 2 distances went in different directions. Theory was good as we soon started to do what they referred to as a steady through and off, I never missed a turn but I wouldn’t have called it steady nor would the 40 odd riders we must have passed in 15 miles, 3 tagged on and did between 1 and 3 turns before they were shelled out the back. That was then the end of any assistance for me, from 18 to 53 miles I never met another rider. I got into a near time trial rhythm and just put my head down, great idea that was until about 60 miles when I started to suffer, the last 10 miles were hell, cramp behind the knees up hills in the saddle, cramp in the front of my legs out of the saddle, feeling sick and very light headed. I eventually finished in 5 hours 7 minutes which included a 1 minute stop to fill up my drinking bottle and 65 miles on my own but I had no idea if that was a good or bad ride, it did qualify me for a silver standard medal. The only thing I knew was that nobody had passed me not even when I was doing a near walking speed towards the end. The results were published on the Sunday and now I feel very happy probably in no small part to the fact that I don’t feel like I’m about to die anymore and even more by the fact that I was the fastest rider by 38 minutes and the only one in the 80 mile distance to qualify for a silver standard medal. Across all three distances only one rider qualified for a gold medal, he was in the 56 mile event, I was the only silver with the rest getting bronze. The rider from Mallorca and his team mate came in first and second in the 97 mile event. It was an interesting route but it was seriously hilly with 8,800 foot of ascent according to my computer, 9,990 feet according to the organisers, hilly who ever is right so no surprise really that I blow up big time, 5 hours of constant effort, average heart rate for the whole ride of 142 bpm and just over 1,100 foot of climbing every 10 miles.

Would I have another go, most certainly but I would also try to get a group of similar abilities to enter and ride together.

Tony Flynn rode the Bath Road Club Black Park ’9.2′. He recorded a 24:02. It was a nice evening. It was won by M. Ketterer of Team Quest with a 22:41.

Saturday
Crabwood CC P613 ’10′: Gill did a 24:29 and Pete Cookson did a 23:06 despite riding around the turn roundabout twice. Good to get the miles in, Peter.

Several of us rode the Charlotteville CC ’25′ at Bentley (H25/8). I was fastest with a 1:01:32, just shading Russell O’Malley who did 1:01:56 before setting out for a run.Chris James recorded 1:07:40 and Brian Moon did a 1:10:46. Alex Dowsett (U23 Trek-Livestrong) won the event by nearly 5 minutes with a course record 47:50. It was a warm and breezy day.

Jayne Paine has bagged a Gold Medal and three silvers at the UK Track Masters at Manchester this weekend. The Gold came from her signature event - the Points race. One of the Silvers came from the Pursuit event - full details will follow.

Well done Jayne! You might even qualify for the Queen of Mountains with all that podium scaling.

New site underway

Sorry it's taken us a while to get around to it, but we are now building a new website with the blog in-built. We will try our best to move over all content from the existing blog and we hope to get the new site up in the next few weeks. However... we need PHOTOS. I don't know about you, but I am bored of seeing all of the road-racers on the site, when the club does so much more. So if you have any good (high-res) pictures of track events, club rubs, social events, club dinner, whatever, send them over.

Our main goal for the new site is to allow club members to update the site themselves, that way it will always be current and relevant.

For now here is a sneaky peak!

Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship

Good morning

You may or may not be aware that The Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship London returns to Hyde Park on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July 2010.

I thought this event may appeal to your cyclists and am wondering whether any of them would like to get up close to the action by way of taking up a volunteer position along the racecourse. As well as providing a great experience, these positions are vital to the success of the event.

I would greatly appreciate your assistance – could you kindly advertise this opportunity to all of your members? I have attached a form that volunteers can return to us, which also provides further information about the event.

I am hoping to hear from volunteers within the next week but if this is not possible I would be happy to hear from them anytime up until the event.

West London Combine WCC league LATEST

There was no handicap award for Sunday's '50', but I've updated the 'Fastest' table to reflect the current standings. Three of the four finishers move up the table with only poor Peter failing to progress (he was already in first place). With only three events left it's going to take an extraordinary amount of TT Secretary corruption to beat him now.

Jayne 'Bunty' Paine - ladies champeen for the day. Tom 'Tommeke' London (seated to the left of Ray) was men's champeen. Eliz Mehmed (out of shot, probably already on her way to the pawn shop with her trophy) was also a champeen.

Midweek catchup:
Tom London did a 25:51 (road bike) and Tony Flynn did a 26:24 (road bike / tri bars) in the Westerley '10' at the Hillingdon circuit on Wednesday.

Saturday:
While the majority of the WCC massive were at the circuit championships, Peter Dixon and Brian Moon headed North to ride the Hertfordshire Wheelers '10' on the F20/10. Brian did a 26:36 but this was eclipsed by Peter's second PB in three days - 20:40. The event was won by Richard O'Rourke in 19:53.

Gill Reynolds was 2nd fastest lady in the Newbury R.C. '10' at Aldermarston (H10/1) with a 26:24. The event was won by Adam Topham in 20:26.

Sunday:
The West London Combine / Westerley CC '50' was on the new H50/4 course this year. Peter Dixon (above, photo by Ron), tired after last night's ride, did 1:57:04 to win it - stunning ride - three PBs in four days. Stuart Birnie did a 2:07:33, Russell O'Malley did a 2:09:08 and I did a 2:11:45 (Stuart, Russell and me, L-R below). A big thank you to Gladys, Ron and Jumbo who made the far Wendover roundabout their own and made it feel very safe. I wouldn't have finished if they hadn't been there checking all the riders through - I couldn't bear the guilt of letting them down.

We had a team riding in the Newbury '25' (H25/1). Pete Cookson recorded 1:00:50 for 9th place, Gill Reynolds 1:08:04 (1st lady and first lady overall for the weekend) and Joe Foley 1:10:22. WCC were 2^nd team behind the Hounslow. Event winner was Tejvan Pettinger with a 54:24.

Coming up:
Saturday 17th July: There's a '10' run by North Hampshire RC on the H10/8 (Bentley).

Sunday 18th July: I'm riding my dad's memorial event (a '25') in Wales. Locally there is the next round of the Richmond Park TTs (closing date 4th July). This event has its own special rules and entry form available here.

Hillingdon Race Results

The Willesden CC dominated the all the events at Hillingdon yesterday afternoon, with our riders filling all the top 40+ positions in the Individual 1 lap time trial, the team time trial and the final 10 lap Crit!

We stripped the trophy stand of all silverware, plus all the free Lucozade bottles going as well. No other club had a look in - what a masterful performance - what a great day!!!

WCC "Members only" race day looks like being a permanent fixture on the annual calendar. Thanks to Tony Woodford and Ray Kelly for organising the day, it was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. A full report peppered with a some of of "Paparazzi" Purdy's finest shots will soon follow.

TT report - 24 June

Thursday
Peter Dixon and I rode the Maidenhead and Dist CC club '10' on the Maidenhead Thicket course (H10/2). Peter came second with a new personal best of 21:42 and I recorded a 24:38. The event was won by Peter Weir of the host club in 21:02. It was a warm windless evening.
